Some of those men, aged 30 to 51 when the class began, stuck with the program for more than 20 years. And today they're reaping the benefits of that commitment.

Now graying and many of them grandfathers, they have cholesterol and triglyceride levels that are better than when they were younger, and their aerobic capacity, flexibility and strength have not shown expected age-related declines.

"My definition of aging is when you can't do the things physically that you used to do when you were years younger," said Golding, who led the exercise class until it was disbanded a couple of years ago because of logistical issues with parking and finding a meeting space on campus. "People who exercise regularly continue doing the things they used to do when they were in their 20s."

Along with a healthy diet, staying mentally active and socially engaged, exercise is emerging as one of the key ways of staving off chronic diseases and, in general, staying healthier in old age, experts say.

In fact, next to maintaining a healthy weight, exercise in men was found to be the most important factor in warding off heart failure, or the loss of ability to pump blood that can lead to death, according to a study published in mid-2009 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Among men who exercised five or more times a week, 11 percent developed heart failure, compared with 14 percent who didn't exercise, the study found.

Physical activity is just as important for women. A study of 27,000 women with an average age of 55 found that, over the course of 11 years, those who exercised were 40 percent less likely to have a heart attack than women who were sedentary. The study was published in late 2009 in Circulation.

"The most important organ in an older person's body is their legs," said Dr. Walter Bortz, a professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. "If your legs stay good, everything else takes care of itself. You don't fall down and break your hip. Your heart stays good. You don't get frail. Your sex stays good, your brain stays good and you cost less money."

Bortz, who is 80 and has written several books on aging and exercise, finished the Boston Marathon on April 19 in about 7 hours 30 minutes -- his 40th marathon in as many years.

It's never too late for seniors to start exercising, he said.

"Even people in their 70s still have a tremendous capacity to improve their strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity," Bortz said.

So how much should middle-age people or seniors strive for? At least three, 30-minute sessions of exercise a week, though more is better, Bortz said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends five sessions a week.

At UNLV, Golding led a 45-minute class weekdays from September to May. There was no boom box, no equipment -- just Golding counting repetitions from the front of the room. Experienced class members did three sets of 50 sit-ups and three sets of 20 push-ups, for example.

The men, all white, all sedentary and most mildly overweight, quickly showed improvement. Within two to three years, participants, regardless of their age, on average performed better on tests of flexibility, strength and aerobics than incoming freshman, Golding said.

Among the 20 who continued coming to class -- 3½ times a week for more than 20 years -- low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the bad type, dropped 27 percent after the first year and 60 percent over 20 years. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the good type, increased by 60 percent after the first year and continued to improve for the next 15 years, according to research published in 2009 in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.

Total cholesterol (LDL, HDL and other lipid components) dropped nearly 18 percent after year one and 40 percent over 20 years, the study found. Triglyceride levels decreased every year, including 23 percent after the first year and 61 percent over 20 years.

The men also lost an average of 27 pounds, though the improvements in cholesterol profiles were independent of weight loss, according to the study.

And, as they sweated together, friendships developed, with the men ribbing one another if someone slacked off and didn't show up for awhile. "It became a positive addiction after awhile, and people were pretty upset when we ended the class," Golding said. "These men were beating the aging process."

Washington (CNN) -- The Supreme Court, perhaps for the final time, has rejected a multistate appeal over efforts to keep the invasive Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes ecosystem.

The justices turned aside another request for intervention Monday, the latest chapter in a nearly century-old dispute between six Midwest states and the Canadian province of Ontario.

At issue is a direct challenge to Illinois' complex water diversion and sewage disposal network, which some predict will inadvertently allow the non-native fish to enter Lake Michigan. Some environmentalists and lawmakers fear an economic and ecological disaster if the creatures breach man-made barriers. And there are concerns that the fish may have already slipped past locks and entered the massive freshwater bodies of water.

The fish can grow up to 4 feet in length and 100 pounds in weight, reproduce rapidly and can gobble up to 40 percent of their body weight daily, quickly out-competing less aggressive native fish populations.

The high court has refused to intervene in the case twice in recent months. Some activists say Michigan could file another appeal in federal court, but it could take months to resolve.

The justices were asked to grant a preliminary injunction, which would have forced Illinois to immediately close down much of its Chicago-area shipping locks and dams, and would have prompted rapid construction of a fish-proof barrier.

The voracious Asian carp have migrated up the Mississippi River to the Chicago suburbs. State officials, businesses, and environmentalists fear that it is only a step away from triggering a swift economic disaster across the Great Lakes, saying that once in Lake Michigan they would spread quickly to Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario and Lake Superior.

"What could be at stake is the multibillion-dollar fishing industry -- commercial, sports fishing, and recreational fishing industries -- in the Great Lakes," said Chris McCloud of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, noting that the lakes constitute "the largest freshwater body on Earth, and we have to protect it at all costs."

DNA from the carp was found in December closer to Lake Michigan than ever before -- at a Wilmette, Illinois, pumping station along the lake shore -- raising fresh concerns that the fish has breached an electric barrier placed along a maze of canals and locks in Illinois.

In a signal of the urgency, Michigan, Wisconsin and New York have repeatedly but unsuccessfully asked the high court to order those locks closed immediately.

Among those being sued are Chicago's local water reclamation agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which helped build and maintain the canal system. Illinois officials say other states and the federal courts do not have the legal authority to order the closing of any federally approved water management projects. There are fears that shutting down the locks would lead to massive flooding and cripple the area's commercial shipping industry.

The term "Asian carp" is actually an umbrella name for at least four large varieties of fish considered nuisance invasive species: the grass, black, silver and bighead carp. Related to common goldfish, the bigger types are prolific jumpers, easily spooked out of the water by passing watercraft, and numerous boaters have been injured by inadvertent flying fish collisions.

Biologists have been tracking their northern migration ever since they were imported in the 1960s, traced to an Arkansas fish farmer. Several of the fish escaped during a flood in the 1990s and quickly expanded their range.

Their possible presence just miles from the lakes prompted the latest lawsuit over the so-called Chicago Diversion, a project started in the late 1800s to prevent the city's sewage from contaminating Lake Michigan. The project involved reversing the flow of the Chicago River, connecting it and two other nearby rivers with the Mississippi River basin.

That created a connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi, helping fuel an economic boom in the nation's third largest metropolitan area.

In 1922, Wisconsin sued Illinois to stop the growing water diversion, since other states relied on the drinking water. All other lake states except Indiana joined suit, and the Supreme Court eventually agreed with them, ordering mitigating effects over Illinois' diversion. Now several of those states are asking the justices to reopen the old cases.

Such interstate disputes over boundaries and shared natural resources are one of the few instances where appeals can go directly to the Supreme Court, instead of first being heard in lower courts.

The Obama administration is supporting Illinois. In a filing with the high court last fall, Solicitor General Elena Kagan argued that although allowing the carp to enter the Great Lakes would produce "grave and irreparable harm," it was only "speculative" that the harm would occur "imminently."

She suggested that Michigan and other states were more interested in relitigating disputes over removal of water from the lakes than seeking to stop fish from entering the lakes.

The other states and Canada want the Illinois water diversion projects be declared a "public nuisance" because of the carp emergency. Of more immediate concern, they want Illinois and federal officials to modify their fish-control facilities -- including electric fences -- to ensure that the fish stay away from the lakes.

Electric barriers were set up in 2002 in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, about 33 miles from Lake Michigan. They became fully operational last year, but Army engineers acknowledge that the barrier is not 100 percent effective. It is designed not to kill carp but to discourage them from going further.

"We can control what the fish feels, basically," said Col. Vincent Quarles, commander of the Chicago District of the Army Corps of Engineers. "What they feel is a jolt or a tingle. It's an electric current in the canal being created by our barriers." Another underwater barrier is set for completion this year.

Withernsea, population around 4000, is a seaside resort town in the East Riding of Yorkshire which forms the focal point for a wider community of small villages in Holderness. Its most famous landmark is the white inland lighthouse, standing around 38 metres above Hull Road. Town planners decided to remove the final section during construction of sea defences during this period.
Withernsea, like many British resorts, has suffered from a decline in the number of visiting holidaymakers over the last decades of the 20th century. The once sparkling neon lights of the numerous amusement arcades lining the stretch behind Queen Street now seem decrepit and are a magnet for the town's undesirables and burgeoning drug problem. Even the once popular Teddy's nightclub is now renamed — with no reference to the naughty postcard humour of old.
The town is also home to a nine-hole golf course, a large school complex and an RNLI lifeboat museum. There are several miles of pebble beaches over which large clay cliffs loom. It was heralded as a possibility of building communism via a massive program of industrialization and collectivization. The Weedy Sea Dragon or Common Sea Dragon is a marine fish related to the seahorse. It is the only member of the genus Phyllopteryx. They occur in water 3 to 50 meters deep round the southern coastline of Australia, approximately between Port Stephens, New South Wales and Geraldton, Western Australia, as well as around Tasmania. Weedy sea dragons are named for the weed-like projections on their bodies that camouflage them as they move among the seaweed beds where they are usually found.

Weedy sea dragons reach up to 45 cm in length. They feed on tiny crustacea and other zooplankton, which are sucked into the end of their tube-like snout.A more cryptic relative of the weedy sea dragon is the leafy sea dragon. However, according to the November 2006 issue of National Geographic magazine, marine biologist Greg Rouse believes leafy and weedy sea dragons may be the same species residing in a wide territory.

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California and Melbourne Aquarium in Australia are the only facilities in the world to have successfully bred Weedy Sea Dragons in captivity.The Weedy Sea Dragon is an aquatic emblem of the State of Victoria.The Leafy Sea Dragon Festival is held biennially in the Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide.

Chickenpox, also spelled chicken pox, is the common name for Varicella simplex, classically one of the childhood infectious diseases caught and survived by most children.

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus also known as human herpes virus 3 , one of the eight herpes viruses known to affect humans. Pregnant women not known to be immune and who come into contact with chickenpox may need urgent treatment as the virus can cause serious problems for the fetus.Later in life, viruses remaining dormant in the nerves can reactivate causing localised eruptions of shingles. This occurs particularly in people with compromised immune systems, such as the elderly, and perhaps even those suffering sunburn. Unlike chickenpox which normally fully settles, shingles may result in persisting post-herpetic neuralgia pain.

A chickenpox vaccine has been available since 1995, and is now required in some countries for children to be admitted into elementary school unless the parent/guardian submits an exemption. In addition, effective medications are available to treat chickenpox in healthy adults and immunocompromised persons.

Jakob Balde (1604—1668), German Latinist, was born at Ensisheim in Alsace on January 4 1604.
Driven from Alsace by the marauding bands of Count Mansfeld, he fled to Ingolstadt where he began to study law. A love disappointment, however, turned his thoughts to the church, and in 1624 he entered the Society of Jesus. Continuing his study of the humanities, he became in 1628 professor of rhetoric at Innsbruck, and in 1635 at Ingolstadt, whither he had been transferred by his superiors in order to study theology. In 1633 he was ordained priest.
His lectures and poems had now made him famous, and he was summoned to Munich where, in 1638, he became court chaplain to the elector Maximilian I He remained in Munich till 1650, when he went to live at Landshut and afterwards at Amberg. In 1654 he was transferred to Neuburg on the Danube, as court preacher and confessor to the count palatine. He died at Neuburg on August 9 1668.
A collected edition of Balde's works in 4 vols was published at Cologne in 1650; a more complete edition in 8 vols at Munich, 1729; also a good selection by L. Spach (Paris and Strassburg, 1871). An edition of his Latin lyrics appeared at Regensburg in 1884. There are translations into German of some of his odes, by J. Schrott and M. Schleich (Munich, 1870). See G. The Bald Uakari (Cacajao calvus), also known as the Red Uakari or Bald-headed Uakari, is a distinctive red-faced monkey found in swampy forests in Brazil, Peru, and Columbia. The species is considered "near threatened" by the 2004 World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List because of hunting and the destruction of its habitat. They have little fur on the face, with bright red facial skin a sign of good health, enabling them to choose the healthiest (most red-faced) to mate with. Bald uakaris feed mainly on seeds and flowers, and some small animals.
They live in mixed groups of between five and 30 members, spending most of their time on the ground searching for seeds, and at night sleeping in trees for safety. The breeding season is between October and May. The female encourages the male to mate by releasing an attractive scent. The gestation period is unknown.
